Moses Botkin Monthly Challenge

I'm a day late. My apologies to my challenge partners. I've just been kind of avoiding the studio lately. First it was intentional. And now its been a slump of epic proportions. Even the challenge didn't get me motivated. It was the first one I missed though and I felt badly. So I wanted to share the others work at the very least. I'm warming up again finally and enjoyed trying a little watercolor sketch. I felt I owed it to my camera too. I'd be lost without it and I like the idea of paying homage to this wonderful artist's tool.

Moses Botkin Monthly Challenge

This month's challenge... our favorite treat. And if you didn't see this one coming from me, you don't know me very well!
Hot Chocolate, from Starbucks especially. And yes, I had saved this many cups and more in a few day's time. Speaking of, I wish I had one now to enjoy out in my backyard where my daughter is enjoying the first day of spring break.
I feel like I could also dig into that pie or the other yummy pastries. Vicki chose another favorite of mine... the nutritious, delicious apple. Maybe I will have that instead.

Moses Botkin Monthly Challenge

This month's challenge, an apple, a spoon and something glass, was certainly a challenge for me. I can't set up a still life. I really do think that setting up such requires talent - sort of like decorating maybe. Getting the right grouping, the lighting, the backdrop. Its creating a scene... I just want to get to the painting!

So, I took the concept literally and painted the elements separately. I wanted to zoom in really close and almost abstract them - but that only worked on the glass - which is my favorite hot cocoa mug. The spoon gave me trouble and wouldn't stay upright (no surprise)...so I taped it to the board in front of me. So what you have there is sort of an impressionistic trompe l'oeil. LOL

This group continues to be so fun. I am glad to do it each month and glad to be a part of it. I would encourage others to get together, online or locally, to see how you each interpret a theme. It really makes me think and gets me out of my routine.

Moses Botkin Monthly Challenge

This month we used another of my ideas. I've been repainting my kitchen cabinets and have had the doors off at various times for a couple of weeks. As I walked by the open cabinets I kept thinking they would make an interesting subject. I took the challenge a step further and tried to really get loose! I thoroughly enjoyed breaking the items down to just blocks of color. I'm trying to effect on my newest subway painting. We've had some shifts in the group. A couple of friends had to drop out and we've added a new member, Suzanne Berry. Welcome Suzanne!

Moses Botkin Monthly Challenge

This month I could not have waited any later to paint our challenge (something shiny from the kitchen). BUT, its not that I don't consider the challenge important or compelling. On the contrary, its the one thing that made me climb over the debris in my studio, ignore my house guest and my own stuffy head and paint.
