I dreamed about going to NYC last night. This is a little corner bistro in the West Village where we had lunch one day during a workshop. I hope that the city, and New Jersey and surrounding areas are recovering from Sandy. What a devastating mess. My thoughts are with all in those affected areas.

Cafe Gitane is in NYC right in the Jane Hotel. We ate breakfast there every morning and often ended our day there too with a nightcap (a yummy chocolate chaud). Its a French theme with a little bit of Morocco thrown in - very Casablanca feeling. At night, it glows with the vapor lights from outside and the dim lamps and antique chandeliers inside add to the warm glow. It was fun to try to paint everything with an orangey-pink tinge. These paintings, un and deux, are framed separately but make a nice pair. See them at my show opening next Friday!

Too Many Chefs

This was a fun painting. Thinking of warm cooking fires while we watch our little snow melt outside. School was canceled of course. Snow in central Texas paralyzes the city - my neighbors laughingly called it "snowmageddon." Keep in mind, it was maybe a quarter inch. But it was fun. And its cozy inside. Soon all will be business as usual.

Tea Service

This is the finished version of my start I posted on Friday. He is preparing the goodies that accompany high tea at Payard's in NYC.

I thought I'd give you a sneak peek below of whats on the easel now. I think my long dry spell is over. I'm certainly enjoying my work again and more inspired. I can't wait to get to work everyday!



I began this with washes of color applied with a paper towel for the most part. Sometimes I start with a "line drawing" and sometimes with large shapes. It depends on my mood really.

Making Merry

This is a commissioned piece for a collector who gets first dibs at a new gallery I'm sending work to next week. A similar scene sparked their interest but was no longer available. This is the King Cole bar in the St. Regis hotel in NYC - and the huge mural behind it is by Maxfield Parrish. Its really quite an awesome setting. Very dim and cozy with the mural dominating the room. I wish I had found this link to the bar earlier! What a great image of the mural. My pictures are not so clear, having been taken at night while trying to be subtle in the busy bar. We should've had a drink and stayed awhile. Next time.

I am happy to share the news that Charleston House in Montgomery is going to be representing my work. This painting and a few others are going to be available in their gallery next week.

New York, New York

I am back in Texas after a whirlwind trip to the Big Apple. I met Phil Levine and two other artists to paint in the city and we had the best time. At least I did! It was the best trip there yet. I took 1,100 photos and painted about 8 paintings. I had my sketchbook too which I also filled with pen and ink sketches. I have enough material to work for a year and I can't wait to start!

The ladies I painted with, Petra and Sherrie, are such lovely people. We seemed very well matched in our tastes (for subject, food, eye candy, etc.) and in our energy and eagerness to soak it all in. Petra came all the way from Geneva, Switzerland. Sherrie is from Nashville and if you want to compare our reports and our work - you can probably find goodies on her blog.

I will start at the beginning I guess and show you the "dog" of a painting I did on Friday morning. We set up in the West Village again after dodging some rain. I have tried to paint the Bus Stop Cafe for 2 years now... still didn't get it. I promise, the work improves after this one! (I'm not going to show you a close up. Lets just say though that if the man at the table stood up, he'd never fit into the building!)

This painting has been MIA for awhile, being repped by Debbie Wells in Georgia. The gallery I had there was sold and changed direction, but Debbie and I worked together awhile longer. And I owe her many thanks!
This and some other work came back to me last week, and today I am packaging up to ship to -- drum roll please -- Loretta Goodwin Gallery in Birmingham. Check out the gallery and you will see most of my favorite artists are represented there. I can't tell you how excited I am. Thank you all for sharing this journey with me - for all your feedback and encouragement. I hope to just create better and better art and now have some wonderful outlets to get that work to you.
While my work is on the up, there is no news on my husband's condition yet. Every time the phone rings my heart starts pounding. I hope we have an answer soon and then I can fill you in. Have a wonder-filled weekend.

I'm pleased to announce that I have new representation with Tidewater Gallery in historic Swansboro, NC. I am shipping several paintings there this week and had to share this newest piece before its even dry!

This is a scene from the amazing St. Regis hotel bar, featuring Maxfield Parrish's wonderful mural of King Cole which dominates the room. In painting it, I mostly copied the other artist's work, which actually got a little boring for me. I like to include other art in my paintings, obviously, but when its almost exclusively the subject, its not quite as exciting for me. But its beautiful to look at and I like the silhouettes playing against the mural.

There are some funny spots on the image here because this is on loose linen and it wasn't laying flat for the photo. I will let it dry and then, using bookbinders glue, I will mount it to gatorboard.

This painting went to Castle Gallery last week for their Valentine Show. The reception is Saturday night from 5-10 pm. Always a good party - so those nearby should try to go. This scene is from Mario Batali's restaurant Del Posto in New York City.

Tending the Bar

A lot of my New York trip seems to center around food. Hmmm... so does my life really. Its one of my pleasures. I am not that great a cook, however. I'm good at down home, comfort foods, but have a gourmet taste too that can only be satisfied by chef-prepared meals. This is a little neighborhood bar we stopped in for dessert and an apertif. It was late and the restaurant was nearly empty. The bartender spent most of his time chatting with a customer at the end of the bar unknowingly giving me lots of inspiration.

Tea For One

My friend and I had French high tea at Payard Patisserie the afternoon of our arrival. What a lovely respite from our long walks and power shopping. I didn't have a lot of time to shop, so I had to do as much as I could in one afternoon. The gentleman above looked so comfortable as he sipped his tea nearby.

The tea and pastries were so satisfying that we managed the long trek back to 51st (shopping more along the way, mind you) and finished our day with dinner at a French place next to our hotel. C'était délicieux.

I love the ambiance in finer restaurants. The murmur of voices, low, classical music playing, the clink of china and crystal. Ahhh... I think my husband needs to take me out to dinner this weekend.

This was in the elegant "Del Posto" restaurant in NYC. We had a magnificent dinner there and I felt like royalty with all the attention and little extra samples they brought from the kitchen. Very nice meal. Very nice atmosphere. I liked the serene and somewhat severe drama of this painting.
