50th Street Station

16x20 oil on panel

I am not sure I like this very well. I will take my friend V's advice and keep looking at it awhile. She writes the most insightful notes on her blog. Today's being about loving a painting as a process, but perhaps not loving a painting as an object d'art.
I think this piece fell short of my enjoyment.
One thing I think that contributed to this effort's less than satisfying results was the fact that I had to stop and start on it. I never work well that way. I am most definitely an "alla prima" painter. Give me all or give me nothing. So... I might rework this. I might start over. We shall see.

I like that - 'fell short of my enjoyment'. I have been having that issue lately and the stopping and starting on pieces does not seem to work well for me either.

Do NOT start over unless you pull out a new canvas. This is a great painting and I love the expression and "body language" of the gal on the right. Very well done!

My first impression was that I loved this picture. I think you've captured the feel of the subway quite well, particularly the blue lighting. It's interesting that there is pretty much a lack of color on the right side, except for the woman's green sweater. I do focus on the woman on the right, but most of the action leads you to the left. Not sure if it would work, but you could consider clarifying the focal point perhaps. Otherwise, I think it is very strong as is.

I can't imagine what you don't like about it, but that's why we're all different.

I like the quote too.... soooo true... sometimes paintings grow on you and you like them better with time...
(then there are those which you look at months after they were painted and you think.... What the heck was I thinking????) LOL

Well, I love it. It has a perfect fuzzy light all about it, like the people are in motion. My vote: don't change a thing.
