This lady must have everything she could need for a lovely day on the beach. But what I need is a catchy title! Sometimes this is the hardest thing for me - naming the work! I've sat here long enough and have other things to do. Any bright ideas would be appreciated.

Color Coordinated

I am back from two wonderful weeks in Florida. We were at Siesta Key beach this past week and so I begin my paintings there while the memories are still fresh. Siesta Key has the nicest sand beaches in the world I think. Truly it ranks up there with the best. And the sand takes on such wonderful colors - all in line with this lady's coordinated hat, suit, tubes and flip flops.

Big Al

This is a friend of my folks - Big Al - who has a nursery nearby. He starts all his own seeds and has beautiful plants. Anna likes to help her grandma and grandpa garden so she got to pick 4 plants to add to my parents extensive flower beds. This afternoon the rest of our family arrives and we are bound for Siesta Key next! Enjoy your weekend!

Charles Sovek

I just received a note yesterday that Charles Sovek passed away this past weekend. I was to take a workshop with him in NYC this August. I am very sorry for his family and friends and also sorry that I did not get a chance to learn from this great artist in person. I have several of his books which are excellent and his website is a fabulous resource for artists as well as collectors. Please take a look at his work and his lessons. The art world will miss such an inspired and talented artist.

Fresh Melon

Another great thing about this area - all the fresh produce stands and farmers markets on every corner. My folks also grow their own veggies and I am pigging out on the best tomatoes and cucs, free stone peaches from Georgia and wonderful melons. One just can't get fresh produce like this in Austin. This guy was carrying home his melon from a farmer's market in nearby High Springs.
Its fun doing quick sketches like this. I will be working on finished paintings of many of these scenes later in the month.

Florida Sketches

This is just one of the scenes I've been enjoying the last week. The sky is actually looking over my parent's pond at late evening. We had enjoyed some much needed rain most of the day. One thing I adore about the southeast is the spanish moss dripping from trees (the pines and the wonderful old oaks) and I tried to capture this in my little rendering which began as a seven stroke, but with my rather absorbant canvas pad, it was not easy to spread the paint. I had my mom experimenting alongside me too which was fun. And Anna of course, painting on the floor of the lanai, below us. More tomorrow!
