Challenge Me

I need some help from my audience.

I am having a real block when it comes to the small works I offer on here. I think that the limited size of the panel feels confining and I have trouble thinking of what to put on so small a scale.

So my challenge to you, is to come up with some thing to get me motivated. Send me your photos, suggest I paint insects, animals, only in blue, something!

Leave your comments here so we can all have fun with this challenge and lets see if we can get me motivated!

robin- its true that you have to pick simpler scenes for the smaller panels but i always try to make no more than 7 shapes on ANY painting i do even it its 24x30. tons of painters do that. so the shapes will be smaller in size thats all. you will of course be able to less detail but thats the place where many of us are trying to get to anyway.
i guess what i'm saying is dont let the size of the format psyche you out.
i saw a huge landscape by cooper dragonette last winter on a 5x7. when it was on his blog it looked like it was a very large painting. that changed my mind about what could be done on these small formats.
so go get em. you are an amazing painter. dont let your "anti-muse" convince you otherwise. my new painting is proof that, in this, i'm 100% right!

Robin! I just nominated you for the Brilliante WEBlog Award for the incredible mother in you that is adjusting to kindergarten and more time at her easel, for your fabulous bravery in painting LIVE at weddings, and for your stunning 30 minute studies that show your skill and finesses. The rules for passing on the award on are my Sept. 11 blog entry. XOXO Laurel
PS - I am thinking of a good assignment for you. :)

Hi Robin,

Seems to me on the smaller sizes that it's all about composition and what works in its simplest forms. Like something that would work and attract your attention from across the room.

You might also try something out of your typical scheme, such as a black and white image, perhaps a silhouette?

Best regards, John

Robin-

I really, really love and admire your interiors, but if you're looking for some pictures to work from for the sake of doing something different, I put some of my reference pics up on my studio blog ( http://kellie-hill.blogspot.com ) as reference to whoever wants to use them. Would love to see your take!

Best wishes,
Kellie

People at farmer's markets, antique or outdoor fairs, fruit and vegetable stands on the side of a country road, pumpkin patches. . . Hope this helps!

Robin,
I love the way that you handle light - How about painting a simple still life of a glass half full of water?

How about still life that's back lit only but the sun coming from the window so the objects are barely silhouettes? I've been wanting to do that anyway :)

I was looking forward to the "Scenes from Austin" series.

And don't do any "Aggies" - I wouldn't want you to have to drive to a trailer park to find any. heh heh

well, what popped into my head was........ things for a powder room.....paintings of lipsticks, perfume bottles, shoes, feminine items. also things to do with wine(not for the powder room!)......good times are usually associated with the pouring of wine....

Why not try odd things, like the doorknobs/handles in your house or your favorite lipstick, etc. Do some studies of your favorite things.
