I just got this fabulous book - certainly more than a catalog. Its simply called "Joaquin Sorolla" and was printed in conjunction with a Museo del Prado exhibit this year of Sorolla's work. I got the book through the Barnsite Gallery.
The book is massively heavy and has excellent reproductions. Its also incredibly comprehensive. Its delicious!

I so love his work... I have two books of his paintings... Both from the internet and one better than the other because it has so many gorgeous plates of the paintings.
I would love to visit his museum home in Spain.
I have been to Madrid and The Prado and unfortunately I didn't see Sorolla then as I was mainly interested in Velasquez and El Greco. It is an amazing city. Try and visit.
ROBIN...
Someone contacted me about the books I mentioned that I have... here is my response just in case anyone else is interested:
........
Yes.. I got two online... sight unseen and they were BOTH expensive.
One (not my favorite... mostly because it's in Spanish) is called "Sorolla y la Hispanic Society" - Una vision de la Espana de entresiglos ... I think it was published for two shows... one in Madrid in 1998 and and one in Valencia in 1999. It has black and whites in the first part but lots of color plates in the second part.... also studies showing how he worked toward getting a finished product. There are many paintings I'd never seen before... some of the less familiar ones. Good grief the man could paint such absolutely gorgeous whites, couldn't he?? There are also lots of letters in the back... Too bad my Spanish isn't great... I might enjoy it more.
The second is my favorite -- It's about 1/2 as big.. only about 250 pages vs 450 for the first. It's called "The Painter Juaquin Sorolla y Bastida" -- Edited by Edmund Peel Looks like it, too, was done for an exhibition .. When the show traveled from Valencia to San Diego back in 1989. This is the one I love.... .. I understand the text better AND the paintings are some of the more familiar ones.
Now that you've got me looking, I'm going to have to go back to that first book again and study some of the paintings... THANKS for the question...
I may also post this in the comments of Robin's original post if anyone might find it useful.
