Year's End

12x9 oil on carton board
nfs

Today I painted my contribution for Different Strokes for Different Folks' final challenge - we submitted and then were sent random photo portraits. I waited until the last minute practically, as usual. But enjoyed it thoroughly.
And this is my last painting of 2009. What a year. Its been up and down certainly and I hope for a more stable 2010 for us all. I am excited to start a new body of work next week.
Happy New Year!!

Robin,

Such a beautiful entry for DSFDF challenge. Although I've heard your name among the PAA folks, this is the first time I've seen your work (other than just having visited your website). Your work is gorgeous throughout. Best of everything in 2010!

Love your work and blog. The portrait you painted was on carton board. I haven't heard of this surface in the art community. Could you explain what it is and why you chose it? Thank you and happy new year!

This portrait is so beautifully painted! I love your work and your approach to the oh so common creative block. Thanks for sharing and helping make it okay to take a break for whatever reasons make it necessary.

Hi Robin - Wow, your portrait is one of my favorite! I love your strong loose brushstrokes...beautiful flesh tones and love how you handled her hair. Great job!

I have never painted on carton board. Do you get this at an art supply store?

I too love your work! What is carton board? Is it the same as cardboard? What a natural expression and the hair is phenomenal! Wonderful interpretation of the skin on her face.

Robin, your portrait is quite pleasing. You made for a happy persona. All the shapes are wonderful. I love the shadows you included on the face. Colors are perfect foil for each other. Great job. Ruth

Hi Linda -
I knew that the name carton board would throw people. Its like cardboard. Only archival. I buy it from Judson's - http://www.judsonsart.com/ProductCart/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=29&idproduct=226.
Its thin tan cardstock mixed with resins. Its brittle so has to be mounted on something stiff so it won't break but can be framed like any other panel then. I like the surface because it has the effect of some of the old masters and looks a little like pastels. I like the tone of the paper too - its great to leave areas unpainted. Fun stuff!

I love your style. (Hope you don't mind if I 'try' to copy it!) Love the portrait, and lots of your other work, too.
